Hmmmm...
"The government is reasonably tolerant of well-educated professionals online. But the farmers, upset about corrupt local officials, are serious activists, and they pose a real threat to Beijing; they staged 70,000 demonstrations in 2004, many of which the government violently suppressed."
I wish the article had discussed poverty and corruption in greater detail. How is the internet and the challenges and choices of foreign Internet companies, relevant to the farmers or migrant workers? Is the internet, as google evidently hopes, an inherently positive opportunity, or potentially another way for party officials and economic elites to consolidate their hold on political power?

thanks onny, I will read it when my work slows down.
I think I just committed myself to learning asp.net. woot. that may mean that I get a pc to develop on.

here's a link to an interesting long-form (10 pages) NYTimes article that I came across last night. The title is "Google in China" but, having read only half the article, it seems to be more about the Internet in China, censorship, and culture.

BBQ = tonight at 10.

I have a Big Important Question for all of you html junkies.
I'm working on my brother's new website, and we were thinking of having one of those little "sign up for the mailing list" boxes, with a "submit" button.
How would this work? is it very complicated? where could those email addresses that people submit be sent?
any ideas?
