Everyone touts the web as having potential to bring freedom to China, but that's not how it is being used now.

From the NYTimes:
On any of China's leading search engines, enter sensitive political terms like "Tiananmen Square" or "Falun Gong," and the computer is likely to crash or simply offer a list of censored Web sites. But terms like "hot sex" or "illegal drugs" take users to dozens of links to Web sites allowing them to download sex videos, gain entry to online sports gambling dens or even make purchases of heroin.

Of course freedom is illegal, but so is gambling, but the Chinese govt. is more adept at stamping out freedom sites. I think that when criminals stand to profit, as they do from the gambling sites, they are probably just more persistent than those who are trying to call for freedom. But what does that tell us about human nature?
