listened to it while making pancakes this morning... whizz, fizzle pop, WHOOOSH WHOOOSH.
JB: you've got a tape player?! ;)
Yann: I have a question for you. In that Groanbox Boys video (and others that I've seen of studios) it seems like sliding glass doors are popular. Don't these produce nasty reflections? Is the secret that there is no parallel wall opposite the door? I see that they have the door open in the video, but with sliding glass doors, you can only reduce the surface area by half when then door is open (one door slides behind another). So, um, why do they use these types of doors? There has to be something that I'm not getting... Thanks!
morgan is ruining me with the obsolete technologies. there are FOUR tape players in her house. including one that is an identical model to the one that I threw out last year.
re: sliding doors, easier to insulate around the edges I think. I mean, you need to have some type of door. but that said, I have seen more of other types of doors in studios than sliding glass doors. have not been in a studio for a while tho.
re: glass doors in studios (sounds like the beginning of a proverb)...
You can't really get around the need for glass in studios, since you need to be sonically isolated but still see each other. it tends to reflect, but you're absolutely right that having them at an angle reduces that so it is normally not an issue...good studios will often not have any parallel walls at all, since those are much more likely to cause problems with standing waves and things than glass on it's own.
in terms of having them sliding, I think jon's right that it's probably just easier to isolate them, though it could be a space-saving thing in smaller rooms, to avoid having a big area you have to keep clear to let the door swing. i think they're probably less prevalent than regular big solid doors.

Thanks Jon and Yann!

i just realized how creepy the lead photo in this thread is. That kid is super. super. freaky. and also, there's a homey in the background pulling his shorts off.
my mind is bottled, like in a bottle.
It was the first Google Image hit for "Kid rocking out". Well, like the first three hits, actually.
