+ dinner on parents' deck
garden update + iphone video (damn, sorry that is so low res... need to learn how to use this fucker)
is that quinoa cold in the mango salad? that sounds great! like crunchy and soft in the same bite.
I got this photo from my parents:
I overcooked the quinoa, so it came out a bit mushy--but it tasted good. It was my first time cooking quinoa.
might be too much water? also, if you let it sit overnight it tends to dry out a bit, just like rice. DAY OLD RICE FOR LIFE.
i was in israel! just got back yesterday. the whole trip was flippin ridiculous. if any of you are eligible for birthright, go on the israel by bike trip. srsly.
highlights:
camping in a crater
desert bike-rides
swimming in the Mediterranean and dead seas
holon design museum (building by ron arad)
temporary wizard tattoos
the western wall
everything, everything, everything!
onny, for quinoa, i recommend the following:
make it as you normally would, but replace half the water with the same amount of chicken or vegetable broth
in a separate pan, quickly saute the following in a generous amount of olive oil:
shallots, copious garlic (or scapes, if if you are in the CSA trend this year), as much basil as you think you'd need x 1.5
dump it on the cooked quinoa and squeeze out 1 lemon per cup. add cracked pepper and paprika to taste. a pinch of cumin is good if you want it.
CSA trend come on man!
but yeah, everything josh says is correct... altho I normally don't use basil on quinoa, I should give it a try!
p.s. josh, thinking about you! josh.blog.partymode.org
Thanks, Josh! I'll give that a shot.
um.
i made black sesame ice cream.
its yummy.
i just wanted to brag about it.
there.
pix plzzzz.
jonbro... maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe roadtripping a little bit in september... if i do, i'll stop through pxburgh.
but i'll also use this time to shamelessly plug that the wassaic project is having its summer festival from august 13 to 15. its entirely free (including free on-site camping).
so far, bands include lightning bolt, amazing baby (former members of mgmt)

Thanks for posting the quinoa and mango salad recipe. Sounds fabulous -- we'll have to try it. Now that our CSA has begun, we have so much more produce in the fridge.
Our holiday weekend:
- Driving to Philly (without giving birth en route)
- Veggie grilling and s'mores
- Watching amazing fireworks from a parking lot
- Trivial Pursuit and canasta
- Avatar on TV
- Staying up much later than my usual 9:00 pm
- Chats w/sisters-in-law
P.S. I am now pretty enormous -- hit the 38-week mark yesterday. Will try to post a belly photo for posterity.
urm. two references to CSA, can I go ahead and ask what it is?
CSA = Community Supported Agriculture, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community-supported_agriculture.
We pick up our weekly share from an area farm http://www.onestrawfarm.com/ at a close city location http://millvalleygeneralstore-cheryl.blogspot.com/.
I want to join a CSA!!!! apparently the ones in brooklyn are not worth it though :(. Too much food and you need to join a waiting list. Because like every thing else thats cool in NY there are too many other people who are interested in it also.
I've got a farmers market right across the street from the apartment, so I will be content with that for now.
Dinah, please post a photo!
ha! i've been away for too long. over here they just call them veg boxes (or, more hilariously british, Veg Box Scheme). we get ours from this place. yum.
Twenty fourth!
Veg boxes sound similar but one of the essential elements of most CSAs is that you pay for a full season up front.
